Black History Month Advisory Activities
All seventh grade students are watching the award winning “Eyes on the Prize” documentary chronicling the Civil Rights Movement. This is a special 2 hour version produced for school use as the original series is approximately 12 hours. Many “primary source” interviews with leaders and members of the civil rights movement as well as some citizens who opposed civil rights and demonstrated for segregation are incorporated in the documentary along with much original news and film footage.
It is being shown during the 7th grade advisory periods this week and the students know to see their math teacher during lunch math lab if needed. Students know to make this arrangement with the math teacher.

Veterans Day Announcement
Seventh Grade Students
7th Grade Classes second period (8:45-10:00AM)-
Fri. 11/11/11
Does your 7th grade son or daughter have a family relative living in the area who is a veteran or current active member of our armed forces?
If so, we would love to honor him/her on Friday, 11/11/11, from 8:45-10:00 AM!!
We would like your 7th grade son/daughter to meet the veteran at the big glass bubble by the attendance office at 8:45. We would then like your 7th grade son/daughter to introduce the veteran to two different groups of 7th grade students from 9:00-10:00 AM ( two separate 1/2 hour sessions, two separate groups of approximately thirty 7th grade students). We would like the veteran to talk to our 7th grade students and answer some respectful questions if time permits.
Please contact Mr. Chittock with the veteran’s name, email address, and phone number after you confirm that the veteran is able to attend the speaking sessions. It is best to email the information (veteran’s name, email address, phone number) to Mr. Chittock at his school email address:
(there is an underscore between the d and c of his first and last name)
Mr. Chittock will contact the veteran with exact times/ additional suggestions/details/directions/etc.
Some topics that veterans in the past have addressed include:
--The training you received
--How the training you received has impacted your life after the military
--Your years of involvement and key domestic/foreign issues faced by America at the time
--Specific jobs you performed while serving
--Places where you served and key domestic/foreign issues faced by that country
--Details/Descriptions of friendships/relationships
--Life changing lessons learned as a result of your service
You do not have to have battlefield experience. Your willingness to sacrifice and serve our country is so worthy of being honored!! This sacrifice, service, and the many friends, experiences, training, and opportunities you experienced are the things our students wish to hear!!

Student Led Conference Philosophy
Dear Parents/Guardians of Seventh Grade Students:
For the upcoming conferences on Wednesday, October 12 and Thursday, October 20, the seventh grade students and faculty will be conducting Student Led Conferences. Each student will conduct a conference with his or her parents/guardians. The students who are unable to conduct their conference at school will need to conference with their parent/guardians at home and return the appropriate information by Friday, October 21, 2011.
The Board of Education has adopted the Middle School Study Plan. Student Led Conferences are in accordance with recommendation 7 of this study: provide students opportunities to set goals and make choices about what they learn, and how they demonstrate that learning. Throughout the middle school experience, students should gradually gain independence and ownership for their learning. Student Led Conferences are emerging as a positive alternative to the traditional middle level parent-teacher conference. “This We Believe” from the National Middle School Association, states that students need to assume control of their own learning, have opportunities to set their own goals, chart their individual growth, and reflect on their progress.
Student Led Conferences will achieve the following goals:
- Encourage students to accept personal responsibility for their academic performance
- Teach students the process of self-evaluation.
- Facilitate the development of the student’s organization and oral communications skills and increase his or her self-confidence.
- Encourage students, parents, and teachers to engage in open and honest dialogue.
- Increase parent attendance at conferences.
Below is specific information on the format for Student Led Conferences:
- Students will accompany their parents/guardians to the conference.
- Students will conduct the conference. They will be taught how to do this successfully and will have practiced the skills necessary.
- Due to the number of students (approximately 6-12) signed up during each time slot, there will be numerous Student Led Conferences taking place at the same time.
- There will be two separate Student Led Conferences that will occur. There will be a 20 minute conference over the core subjects (ELA, Science, and Social Studies). And a separately scheduled 20 minute conference in the math classroom where they will have to complete the math portion of the conference.
- Parents/students need to stay within their scheduled times to respect the scheduled conference times of others.
- 7th grade teachers will be available to support students with specific questions about the checklists provided.
This is the fifth year of the student led conference format and many find it to be extremely beneficial to student and parents alike. You will learn much about your son’s /daughter’s education, classes, and teachers through this process!!!
